Animation in Finland

Finnish animation is famous all over the world mainly thanks to Rovio and its Angry Birds and the Moomins of Tove Jansson.
Let's discover some more about it.

In 20014 Finland is celebrating the centennal of its first animated film (by Eric Vasström) and 100th birthday of Tove Jansson, who created the iconic Moomins in 1940s.

Even if unfortunatly Vasström's work does not exist anymore, still he is considered one of the pioneers of Finnish animation, along with Hjialmar Löfving.
In 1970s Finnish broadcaster YLE built an animation studio that produced distinctive stop-motion puppet and cutout animation. That style, inspired by Finland's renowned design and aesthetic, came to define Finnish animation through the work of animators like Heikki Partanen and his wife, Riitta Rautoma.
Seitsemän Veljestä (Seven Brothers 1979) is the first animation made using watercolors, by artist Riitta Nelimarkka, who studied in Stockholm, Sweden.
Also puppet films by Katariina Lillqvist should be mentioned. Some of them are based on Franz Kafka's writings, touched on politics, philosophy, multiculturalism, tolerance and racism as main subject.
In the 40s came the Moomins, by Tove Jansson, and has become Filand's best-known animation characters, also very popular in Japan.
The Moomins have already starred in three feature films (in 1998, 2008 and 2010) and will retourn to the big screen for the centennial celebration.
[Since Tove Jansson is so important, and since there's an exhibition in Helsinki right now for the centennial, and there will be many events on the 9th August for her birthday, I will talk more specifically about her and her works in a dedicated post.]
 Many are also collaborations between Finnish production and Estonia. A puppetmaker on one such project was Kari Juusonen, who has become one of the pillars of modern Finnish animation after his short film Pizza Passionata won an award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Juusonen then co-directed two of Finland's most popular animated feature films ever, "Niko: the Way to the Stars" in 2008 and "Niko2: Little Brother, big Truble" in 2012. In 2013, Juusonen made a surprisingly artistic change by going to Finland's leading entertainment company, Rovio, where he is directing the TV series Angry Birds Toons.

Both Niko films were produced by Anima Vitae, currently Finland's leading animation studio. Anima Vitae and Rovio co-operate on the Angry Birds animated series. Anima Vitae is trying to get a foot in the door in Asia too. The company opened an office in Kuala Lumpurm and is working on partnerships with Malaysian, Chinese, Korean and Australian studios.
Anima Vitae is producing with Danish Einstein Film a feature film called HUGO, about the nordic troll character, for delivery in 2016.

Without a doubt, Angry Birds is Finland's most successful animation export and Rovio its largest entertainment company. The game reached 2 billion downloads since its introdution in 2010 and a dialogue-free animated series released in 2013 saw more than 1 billion views in its first seven months. An animated feature is now in production, due out July 1, 2016, made with Sony, the animation is being done at the Imageworks in Vancouver.

Co-productions have further spread Finnish animation around the world.
The best example of a Finnish international coproduction is the Finnish/Chinese TV series Dibidogs, produced by Finland's Futurecode.

L'animazione finlandese è famosa in tutto il mondo principalmente grazie a Rovio con i suoi Angry Birds e grazie ai Moomins di Tove Jansson.
Scopriamo qualcosa di più.

Nel 2014 la Finlandia celebra i cent'anni dalla sua prima animazione, un film di Eric Vasström, e anche i centennale della nasciata di Tove Jansson, che ha creato gli iconici Moomins negli anni Quaranta.


Sebbene sfortunatamente nulla rimane del lavoro di Vasström, egli è considerato uno dei pionieri dell'animazione finlandese, insieme con Hjialmar Löfving.
Negli anni Settanta è stato costruito dall'emittende finlandese YLE uno studio che produceva animazione stopmotion con pupazzi e cutouts. Quello stile, ispirato dal famoso design e dall'estetica finlandese, giunse a definire l'animazione di questa nazione attraverso il lavoro di animatori come Heikki Partanen e sua moglie, Riitta Rautoma.
Seitsemän Veljestä (Seven Brothers 1979) è stata la prima animazione fatta usando gli acquarelli, prodotta dall'artista Riitta Nelimarkka, che ha studiato a Stoccolma, in Svezia.
Meritano una menzione anche il film di Katariina Lillqvist, fatti con i pupazzi. Alcuni di essi sono basati su gli scritti di Franz Kafka, toccano temi politici, filosofici, multiculturali e razziali.
Negli anni Quaranta giunsero i Moomins, di Tove Jansson, e sono divenuti i personaggi animati più conosciuti in Finlandia, molto popolari e apprezzati anche in Giappone.
I Moomins sono già stati protagonisti di tre lungometraggi (nel 1998, 2008 e 2010) e torneranno presto sul grande schermo per la celebrazione del centennale.
[Siccome Tove Jansson è così importante qui in Filandia e siccome in occasione del centennale della nascita c'è un'esposizione in città e ci saranno molti eventi nel giorno del suo compleanno - 9 agosto -, scriverò un post dedicato su di lei e sul suo lavoro.]
Sono molte anche le collaborazioni tra la produzione finlandese e la vicina Estonia. Kari Juusonen è un puppetmaked che è divenuto una colonna portante della moderna animazione finlandese, grazie al suo corto Pizza Passionata che ha vinto un premio al Cannes Film Festival.
Juusonen ha poi co-diretto due dei più famosi lungometraggi finlandesi: "Niko: the Way to the Stars" nel 2008 e "Niko2: Little Brother, big Truble" nel 2012.
Nel 2013, Juusonen ha sorpreso tutti andando a lavorare nella grande Rovio, dove dirige ora la serie televisiva Angry Birds Toons.

Entrambi i Niko films sono stati invece prodotti da Anima Vitae, attualmente lo studio finlandese per eccellenza. Anima Vitae e Rovio collaborano tutt'ora insieme per la serie animata Angry Birds animated. Anima Vitae si sta anche proiettando verso Asia. L'azienda ha aperto un ufficio a Kuala Lumpurm e sta lavorando per delle partnerships con studi malesi,cinesi, koreani e australiani.
Anima Vitae is producing sta anche producendo, con Danish Einstein Film, un lungometraggio intitolato HUGO, che ha come protagonista un troll e che vedremo nel 2016.

Senza dubbio Angry Birds è l'animazione finlandese che ha riscontrato maggior successo globale e Rovio è la più grande azienda di intrattenimento della Finlandia. Il gioco ha raggiunto 2 miliardi di downloads dal momento della sua introduzione nel 2010 e la serie animata (prima di dialoghi) uscita nel 2013 ha ottenuto più di un miliardo di visualizzazioni solo nei suoi primi sette mesi.
Ora è in produzione un lungometraggio, che uscirà nel luglio del 2016, fatto con la Sony e animato dalla Imageworks a Vancouver.

Diverse coproduzioni hanno diffuso l'animazione finlandese in tutto il mondo. Il migliore esempio è la coproduzione internazionale tra Finlandia e Cina per la proudione della serie televisiva Dibidogs, prodotta da Finland's Futurecode.
