Helsinki upadate
on the 16th August there was the Helsinki Marathon
the 17th August (yesterday) was the Ravintolapäivä, The Restaurant Day, literally, which means that everyone can cook/bake and sell in the streets. The Esplanadi park was an actual international fair of cultures and tasty food. Amazing. There were also many children selling cookies and muffins.
We went to Suomenlinna and learnt la little more about that little complex of islands.
Sveaborg is its original and Swedish name and was founded on islands off the coast of Helsinki in 1748, as a sea fortess. At that time, Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden.
Then the fortress became a naval base in the Russo-Swedish War, in 1788.
Later in 1808 it surrendered to the Russian army and became a Russian naval base for the following 110 years!
There's a church, built in 1854, which is also a lighthouse and which was converted from Russian Ortodox to Evangelical-Lutheran in 1920s.
In the Second World War the fortress served as a coastal artillery, anti-aircraft artillery and submarine base. There's still one submarine there, transformed into a museum.
In 1991 Suomenlinna was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There's people actually living in Suomenlinna, not many, less than one thousand people, with school and everything they may need, on a small scale.
It's been a crazy windy day and we had a nice picnic there and a tour with my friend Ville.
After the whole day in the wind, we got home and I fell asleep at 8h30 pm, sleeping 12 hours without interruption :) clapclap

il 16 agosto c'è stata la Maratona di Helsinki
il 17 (ieri) c'è stato il Ravintolapäivä, letteralmente il Giorno del Ristorante in cui chiunque può cucinare e vendere per strada le sue leccornnie. Oltre ai bambini che vendevano biscotti e muffins, abbiamo visto il parco Esplanadi pieno di gente, trasformato in una vera e propria fiera culinaria con specialità di tutto il mondo. Una meraviglia per le papille gustative e per il naso.
Poi siamo andati a Suomenlinna e abbiamo imparato qualcosa di nuovo a propostito di questa isola-fortezza al largo di Helsinki. Il nome originale della fortezza svedese è Sveaborg ed è stata fondata nel 1748. A quel tempo la Finlandia era parte del Regno di Svezia.
Successivamente la fortezza è diventata una base navale durante la guerra tra Russia e Svezia nel 1788 e successivamente, arrendendosi all'esercito russo, è diventata nel 1808 una base navale russa, per ben 110 anni!
C'è una chiesa su Suomenlinna, costruita nel 1854, che funge anche da faro e che è stata convertita da russa ortodossa a evangelica-luterana negli anni Venti.
Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale la fortezza è stata la base per l'artiglieria costiera, l'artiglieria antiaerea e base sottomarina. C'è ancora un sottomarino
ora, che è stato trasformato in museo.
Il nome originale della fortezza è Sveaborg, che significa "castello della Svezia". E' poi stata rinominata Suomenlinna, che significa "castello della Finlandia" nel 1918, durante la guerra civile finlandese, quando il complesso di isolotti è stato annesso alla Finlandia e quando è stata anche istituita una prigione su di esso.
Nel 1991 Suomenlinna è stata definita patrimonio mondiale dell'Unesco. Tutt'oggi meno di mille persone vivono su Suomenlinna e hanno tutto, in piccola scala, anche una scuola.E' stata una bella e incredibilmente ventosa giornata e abbiamo fatto un bel giro e un bel picnic col mio amico Ville. Eravamo così cotti dopo quella giornata, che io sono crollata alle otto e mezza di sera e ho dormito per ben 12 ore filate. complimenti :)
